Overview
This project is being funded by The Education Hub in order to support the development and implementation of a range of microcredentials at Mount Aspiring College.
Our goal is to develop a system for validating the students’ capacity and achievement that covers everything that we value in the classroom, and reaches far beyond the classroom’s walls.
If you’re interested in understanding the underpinning of this scheme – and to see our thinking to date, then you’re invited to explore this site – the menus above are a good place to start, as are these entries in the blog:
We are a multi-disciplinary team – and our funding application for 2020 was approved to allow us to pay for the the following roles:
The Roles
5 Micro-credential Team Leaders each with a specific area of responsibility and measurable outcomes in relation to quantity of badges, as well as responsibility for co-ordinating their own team of volunteers:
- “Be” Disposition Credentials – developing credentials that validate the development of the ‘whole person’
- Economics Credentials – designed to work alongside the Level 1 Economics programme
- Science and Maths Credentials – Working with the science and maths teams to develop credentials relevant to students from Year 8-10
- Drama, Dance and/or Spanish Credentials
- Volunteering Credentials – credentials that would support an expansion of our exisiting Year 13 “Students in the Community” programme.
- Teacher collaboration time which will allow the micro-credentials team to meet during two teacher days and to have time allocated to their work within the normal meeting cycle.
- 1 Fixed-term Management Unit for development of micro-credentials for SOAR (PB4L) for the remainder of 2020
The Goal
To create and implement a micro credentials-based assessment scheme in the following selected pilot domains within the school:
- Iron House – Credentials covering positive student disposition from years 7-13 (a quarter of the school).
- Students in the Community – Credentials to support the expansion of this Year 13 volunteering programme across the entire school.
- English – A full credential suite for one Year 11 Class and three Year 10 Classes
- Economics – The Year 11 Cohort (two classes) – in parallel with their NCEA assessment
- Science – Two teachers developing skill credentials for all Science programmes years 7-9 (delivered via integrated studies programme)
- Drama and Dance – Credentials for Year 9 and Year 10 Drama and Year 8 “Performance” (Dance and Drama)
- Maths – One teacher creating a full suite for her Year 8 and Year 10 Maths classes
- Spanish – Credentials for Year 10 Spanish and Junior Spanish.
- Social Sciences – Credentials for Year 8 Social Sciences (delivered via Integrated Studies Programme)
- PB4L – Working in collaboration with Iron House to create credentials for all teachers to award positive student disposition (This will be funded by the school via a Management Unit in 2020)
There will be room for more subjects and teachers to ‘jump on’ throughout the year. If your subject area is not listed and you are interested in joining us – just let us know.
The Impact
We will measure the impact of this work via self-reporting. Students and staff will be surveyed prior to the implementation of micro-credentials in their classrooms and then again at the end of the year. The focus of the impact evaluation will be on efficacy and agency in both groups.
